Company History:
In case you wondered about the origin of the “Windmill”, the Company had
its origins back in 1925 by “Pop” and his son “Sam” as Hollander
Company. The company slogan was and still stands for “Quality, Service
and Price” The Florida division of “Hollander Company” was purchased in
1962 by Jerry and Judy Uffner (Jerry is the grandson of Pop Hollander)
and the company was renamed “Uffner Textile Corporation.
Then as now the primary product of “The Company”
was the converting and distribution of decorative fabrics (Curtain,
Drapery and Upholstery) and drapery hardware. In 1972 Uffner Textiles
became a GSA supplier of draperies and bedspreads to the United States
Government. In conjunction with that appointment, and because of federal
law we started producing inherently fire retardant fabrics (solids and
prints).
In 1977 Uffner became the drapery and bedspread
sub-contractor for Northrup Corporation and the U.S. Army Corp. of
Engineers in the construction of prefabricated housing in Saudi Arabia
for the Air Force bases that were later used in “Desert Storm”.
With their background as Textile Engineers (Jerry
has a B.S. from Lowell Textile (now U of Mass, Lowell), and Stuart has a
B.S in Engineering from the Philadelphia College Of Textiles and Science
(now Philadelphia University). The father and son were called upon by
the government to produce a fabric, originally developed by NASA for our
country’s astronauts, in Olive Green for high altitude flight suits for
Marine Corps pilots from I.E. Dupont’s Nomex* fiber. They produced for a
number of years many hundreds of thousands of yards of flame and
explosion resistant fabric that is still being used by the Marine Corp.
Their experience with fire retardant fabrics led
them to be among the pioneers in producing inherently fire retardant
fabrics for the hotel, cruise line and time share resort industries
(well in advance of the various federal and state laws requiring them).
In 1992 under the trade style “UTC Industries” they started producing
heat transfer prints on inherently fire retardant fabrics for draperies,
bedspreads and upholstery. The Company’s location in Miami, FL provided
a natural background for the design and coloring of many unique and
tropical styles.
In 2001, because of a name conflict, Stuart, now
the President of the Company, made the decision to revert to the
original “Uffner Textile Corp.”. Continuing the theme that had propelled
the company to prominence, he specializes in “Sunbelt” styles and is
known as “The Tropical King”. The Company produces draperies,
bedspreads, drapery hardware and installations for any entity requiring
fire retardancy. Among the newest products produced by the Company is
the “Portofino Hardware Collection” incorporating a baton operated
traverse rod into a 3” wood pole. This product is available in colors
and replaces the need for a more expensive upholstered cornice.
The Company maintains its offices, showroom and
warehouse in easily accessible North Miami Beach, and welcomes visitors.
