Resource - How To Measure and Figure Draperies
The following information should be used to
simplify the process of figuring yardage and labor for a quote.
The first thing that must be determined is the area
that is to covered by the drapery treatment. If wall to wall, ceiling to
floor, the measurement is simple. However if you are dealing with
window treatments, you must first measure the window, and then decide
how much of the wall on each side is to be covered. The same goes
for the top and bottom of the window. If you are going to the floor,
measure from the sill to the floor and decide how high above the window
you want to install the rod. If it is to be a double or triple
treatment (sheer under and valance over) don’t forget the returns that
must be added on for each layer. (a safe add on for the returns is 4”
per layer on each side).
Standard fullness of a lined or blackout lined
drapery is 200% (this may be modified depending on a customers specific
needs or circumstances). Fullness may be adjusted as low as 175%
to as high as 300%, although, we really don’t recommend either end of
the spectrum. 175% fullness is low and would produce a flat looking
drapery. On the other hand, 300% is very full, especially on a
blackout lined drapery, this would create a tendency to balloon out.
To determine the number of widths for a drapery,
you need to decide the fullness desired, for example, let’s assume we
want a blackout lined drapery 200% fullness. There are 3 important
pieces of information necessary to complete this process, they are: 1.
the rod (hardware) width. 2. is the drapery center open or one way draw?
If the draperies are center open, please add 14” to the rod width to
cover overlaps and standard returns, if they are one way draw type,
please add 7”. And 3. the width of the fabric. Once these
questions are answered, figuring your widths is a piece of cake. Let’s
say we need a 96” rod width, center open using 54” fabric.
Example: 96 + 14 = 110 x 2 = 220 / 54 = 4.07 (4 widths)
We usually would round up in order to maintain the
correct fullness, although, you could round down depending on customer
needs.
